Intraoral Adapters

Intraoral Adapters fit onto the head of a neck-type artificial larynx and transform it into an oral-type device. Intraoral adapters deliver the speech signal directly into the mouth by way of a tube, and not through the neck. With a tube placed just inside the lips the user moves his/her tongue, lips, and jaw to form the sounds of speech. In most situations it is preferable to use a neck device on the neck. When an intraoral adapter is needed, it is typically temporary. Some situations where the intraoral adapter is useful include: right after surgery; ventilator use; during radiation treatment; presence of thickened scar tissue on the neck; no sweet spot on the neck can be found.
